SHAFIQ ABDUSSABUR ANNOUNCES
RUN FOR NEW HAVEN MAYOR
New Haven, CT - Shafiq Fulcher Abdussabur, former New Haven Alder, 21 year retired Police Sergeant and lifelong resident of New Haven announces his 2023 candidacy for Mayor. Abdussabur, who was born and raised in the city, decided to run for mayor because he “sees short-term decisions being made with little consideration to long-term vision and critical problems without effective solutions.”
Abdussabur believes his lived experiences, education background and professional career give him the knowledge and unique skill set needed to lead New Haven with a visionary plan into a brighter future. Abdussabur holds a Bachelors of Science in Public Safety Administration and spent three decades committed to public service on every level from running grassroots initiatives to writing city policy, including
- Creating and running CTRIBAT Institute for Social Development – a gun violence prevention extra-curricular program that engaged at risk youth which was recognized nationally and led to New Haven receiving the “All American City Award” (2008)
- Writing city policies and programs, some of which still operate today such as the Street Outreach Worker Program- a proactive social development program aimed at reducing violent crime among youth, young adults, and second chance individuals, which was recognized nationally and led to New Haven receiving the “All American City Award” (2008)
- Serving as a New Haven Police Officer for 21.6 years in various capacities and retiring as decorated Sergeant (2018)
- Serving as former Alder of Ward 28 - Beaver Hills (2022)
- Served on various boards and commissions including the Connecticut Police Transparency & Accountability Task Force, Taskforce for Minority Construction, Clifford Beer and Farnam Neighborhood House Board, Board Creative Arts Workshop.
Abdussabur will file paperwork and make a brief statement to the press Friday January 13th, 2023 at 11:30am in the New Haven Hall of Record at 200 Orange Street, New Haven CT.
